Got a squeaky floorboard? If you have carpet then the last thing you want to do is to pull it all up to mend the squeak. What if we told you that you could fix the problem through the carpet? Here’s how :

• A squeak repair kit – this will include a device which aligns and controls the depth to which you knock in screws, which snap-off below the level of the carpet
Find the Squeak
It helps if you have an assistant, so you can listen while they walk. When you spot a squeak, pop down a piece of masking tape. Keep going until you’ve found them all, there’s likely to be more than one squeaky spot.
Find the Joist
Using a hammer or mallet (rubber tipped to avoid damaging your carpet), tap around the area of the squeak until you hear the solid thud that tells you where the joist is. Mark it with tape.
Find the Other Joist
Repeat the process with the joist on the other side of the squeak, and mark that with tape too.
Secure the Joist
Push that three-legged alignment device down into the carpet over the joist. Following the instructions on the kit, secure a screw through the device and into the joist below. The end of the screw will be higher than the carpet until you remove the head with the slot that is set into one of the device’s legs.
Repeat as Necessary
You will need to repeat this every … Read the rest ...
