How to Refinish Hardwood Flooring

How to Refinish Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is very popular in homes around the world as when it is treated properly it can really give your home that extra bit of character and pizazz. It is important that you, therefore, understand how to refinish it in order to get it to shine in your home or room.

Be aware that this is a job which is going to create a bit of a mess but it is worth it in the end. It is important that you take everything out of the room that you can to save it from getting covered in dirt.

One of the key things to do before starting is to carefully check the floor for things such as nails sticking up, or tacks or even carpet pins as they are the kind of thing that is able to rip through the sandpaper. Sanding the floor is a very important part to this procedure and you certainly do not want to have anything on the floor that can cause problems.

It is a lot easier if you actually hire a proper machine floor sander for this job, so contact your local hire shop and see what they charge. Tell them what you are going to be doing and they can guide you to the right machine for the job.

Make sure you have a range of sandpaper from rough to smooth and start off with the roughest and work towards the smoothest. When it comes to sanding always go with the grain of the wood and never go across it, as you are going to get better results working with the wood.

You then just need to look at finishing the floor with a stain of your choice once it has all been sanded and the dust has been removed. Always make sure you start in a corner and work back towards the door. If you don’t, you may end up stranded and have to ruin the work you’ve done in order to leave! Then, add a polyurethane finish as a top coat to leave it with that shine that you desire.
